Hyperdub is releasing the soundtrack to a visual work by Lawrence Lek in November. AIDOL 爱道 premiered at the Sadie Coles HQ gallery last year, and has appeared at other exhibitions and festivals since. The work is a continuation of Lek's "sinofuturist" universe, focusing on themes of China's global ascent, artificial intelligence and technology.

With AIDOL, Lek explores the importation of algorithmic automation into the products of the culture industry.Steering us through a CGI landscape of monumental Chinese temples, retro-futuristic humanoid robots, and otherworldly cosmic jungles, the adventure is accentuated by a greatest-hits soundtrack of Diva’s singles, all scored by Lek himself.

The camera is on Diva in this futurist universe, partly recognisable (jungle, temples, stadium) and partly abstract and Lawrence Lek is a London-based artist, filmmaker, and musician who unifies diverse practices—CGI, audio-visual performance, gaming, and fiction—into a continuously expanding cinematic universe. Drawing from a background in architecture and electronic music, he produces simulations of real places within future scenarios and alternate geopolitical histories. AIDOL 爱道 is a computer-generated story of a fading superstar who enlists an aspiring AI songwriter to mount a comeback performance. The film is produced using 3D rendering, gaming software and motion capture technology.

To write a review of Lawrence Lek’s AIDOL is almost like writing review of an exhibition instead; Lek brings a level of “experimental” into CGI animation that perhaps even Adult Swim would be afraid to tread. The first soundtrack release on Kode9’s eclectic and pioneering label Hyperdub is taken from Lawrence Lek’s debut feature film ‘AIDOL,’ which premiered at Sadie Coles HQ in 2019. Lek creates virtual worlds of music and cinema which explore the tense relationship between humanity and Artificial Intelligence.
